Easter Isn’t

Maybe Easter Sunday isn’t always new dresses and high heels. Maybe Easter isn’t always baskets with candy and the elaborate dinner with the proverbial ham shared among family. Maybe Easter Sunday isn’t sitting in a crowded church building listening to the obligatory Easter sermon. Because sometimes, it isn’t.

It isn’t this Easter because we are in the hospital. And Easter in the hospital isn’t anything like the traditional Easter. It is instant coffee because the coffee shop is closed. It is watching Veggietales Easter Carol from a hospital bed. It is sneakers and a sweatshirt to stay comfortable. It is a cafeteria lunch amongst strangers. It is IV poles and catheter bags.

But... it is still Easter.

"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you." 2 Cor. 4:8-12

He has risen.

And since he rose from incomprehensible suffering to bring salvation to a broken sinner like me, I can only hope for incomprehensible beauty he will bring from my own suffering.

Ephesians 3:20-21

"Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Amen.
